DEADLY INFECTION
Man Died From Drug-Resistant Bacteria
The seventy-year-old patient suffered from kidney and heart problems and died last month from a staphylococcus infection. He became resistant to antibiotic treatment.
Health officials revealed that this is only the third case of its kind. The bacteria was resistant to vancomycin, a powerful antibiotic used for treatment. Sources told the Associated Press that vancomycin is commonly used to treat staph and should have worked. County health officials are most concerned about the bacteria's resistance to drugs. Health Commissioner Dr. Harold Adel said, "The public should be aware of the fact that persisting on antibiotics when it is not really required, and physicians dispensing anitibiotic treatment as an easy way to deal with the problem when it can be dealt with in another way. "Health officials have alerted all the hospitals in Port Chester County.
Thanks to the World Health Organisation for much of this information.
